Holland and Barrett’s great range of high quality, vegan home baking ingredients means that you can find plant-based alternatives for lots of ingredients.

Following a vegan diet has never been so easy!

Whether you are new to a vegan diet, you have been eating plant-based for years or you are looking to bake for someone else who is vegan, you can find plenty here to help you with your vegan cooking.

    Essential ingredients for vegan baking

There are some ingredients which are simply essential when it comes to baking vegan recipes.

It is very useful to keep a handy supply of these in your cupboards as they can be used in a number of different recipes.

Here are some staple cupboard ingredients:

    Nutritional yeast

Engevita Yeast Flakes B12 are multi-purpose.

Their cheesy, nutty taste makes them ideal for making cheesy sauces or vegan cheese and they can also be sprinkled onto soups, stews and pasta to help enhance the flavour.

Not only is this nutritional yeast tasty but it is also highly nutritional if you are a vegan.

Vitamin B12 is only found naturally in products from animals and so vegans can struggle to get this.

Using fortified yeast flakes in your cooking or baking can therefore help to reduce the risk of a B12 deficiency.

As well as this, the yeast flakes are a great source of both fibre and protein.

Molasses is another great ingredient for baking.

Again, it can be used in a number of baking recipes such as pies and gingerbread.

Also known as black treacle, molasses is made from raw sugar cane and is commonly used as a natural sweetener.

    The best vegan cake ingredients

To make a simple vegan Victoria sponge cake, you can use some of the following ingredients:

    Plant-based milk

Choose your favourite plant-based milk to use in place of eggs in the cake recipe.

You can select from almond milk, soya milk and oat milk.

Everyone has their favourite dairy free milk, so experiment to find out which one works best for you.

    Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is used in vegan baking for its leavening and flavour-enhancing properties.

The acids that it has in it can also help to activate baking powder and help your baking to rise.

    Plant-based spread

Use a plant-based alternative to butter and margarine as one of the main ingredients in the sponge mix. You can also use this to line your cake tin.

You will need flour as one of the main ingredients in the sponge mix.

Doves Farm Gluten & Wheat Free Plain White Flour is free from gluten, wheat, milk, peanut, egg and soya so it is suitable for vegan, vegetarian and kosher diets.

    Caster sugar

Again, caster sugar is one of the main ingredients in your sponge mixture.

Tiana Organic Crystallised Coconut Nectar is a sugar replacement which can be substituted in place of caster sugar in baking.

It is sweet tasting, light golden in colour and crystalised, giving it a similar texture to sugar.

It is also both gluten and dairy free and contains no additives or preservatives – perfect for guilt-free baking!

You will also need a pinch of salt, vanilla extract and a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda.

    Simple vegan cake recipe

Preheat your oven to 180 degrees (160 for a fan oven) and line your cake tin.

Mix the plant-based milk with the vinegar and leave to stand. Mix together the spread, caster sugar, salt and vanilla until the mixture is fluffy.

Add in the flour and the bicarbonate of soda.

Pour the mixture into the cake tin you prepared earlier and bake for 25-30 minutes.

Decorate once the cake has cooled and voila – a delicious vegan sponge cake!

    Baking kits

If you have not got time to bake a cake from scratch, you can buy a baking kit or baking mix as a great alternative.

This makes it easier and quicker to bake some delicious treats, as well as saving on the need to find all of the ingredients.

Lazy Day Foods Gingerbread Kit goes one step further. The gingerbread is provided for you and all you need to do is decorate it.

Providing fun for the whole family, this gingerbread decorating kit is a great rainy-day activity – with a sweet reward for all your hard work!

The kit is gluten free and suitable for vegans and it contains a range of delicious decorations including chocolate buttons, marshmallows and icing.
